Psalms of Praise: Psalm 27

*This post is part of a series looking at the Psalms to encourage your heart towards singing God’s praise all throughout the day. For the rest of the series, go to: Psalms of Praise. Come along with me as we dive into the Psalms and praise God’s name together! *

Welcome to Day 5 of the Psalms of Praise series! It has been such an encouraging week looking at the Psalms, spending time meditating on these truths, and praising God throughout the day for His goodness. Thank you so much for joining along on this journey through the Psalms. I pray it has been an encouragement to you and has drawn you to worship and adore God as you have gone about your everyday moments this week. Our last passage is Psalm 27. I would love to continue hearing how God has moved your heart to praise Him this week, so please continue to share in the comments below!

Psalm 27: The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

Of David.

27 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me
    to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
    it is they who stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
    yet I will be confident.

One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
    and to inquire in his temple.

For he will hide me in his shelter
    in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
    he will lift me high upon a rock.

And now my head shall be lifted up
    above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
    sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
    be gracious to me and answer me!
You have said, “Seek my face.”
My heart says to you,
    “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”
    Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
    O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
    O God of my salvation!
10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
    but the Lord will take me in.

11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
    and lead me on a level path
    because of my enemies.
12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
    for false witnesses have risen against me,
    and they breathe out violence.

13 I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!

Psalm 27 (One Thing) by Shane and Shane

Questions to ponder as you meditate on this passage:

  • What do you learn about God’s character from this passage that you can praise Him for?
  • What does it mean for the Lord to be our light, salvation, and stronghold?
  • How does God’s character draw you away from a heart of fear and into a heart of praise/trust in Him?
  • Do you desire to dwell in the house of the Lord and gaze upon His beauty above all else?

Spend time responding in prayer to our great God and praising his name.

Lord, I praise you that you are my light and my salvation- you are the stronghold of my life, therefore I don’t have to fear for I know you are with me. Draw my heart away from anxiety and fear into a heart that trusts you always. Above all else, I desire to dwell in your house all the days of my life- to seek you and to gaze upon your beauty. May YOU be the one thing that I seek after all the days of my life and would I find the fullness of joy in your presence forevermore. Thank you that as I seek your face, you hear my cry and you answer me, you teach me your way and guide me in every situation. Father, at times I doubt your goodness and struggle to feel your presence. Thank you for the promise of your presence and your goodness as I wait for you. You are always trustworthy and faithful, you alone are worthy of praise. Help me to be strong and courageous in you and to be still in your presence throughout all seasons of my life. Cause me to gaze at your beauty and be amazed at your faithfulness today, and to praise your name! Amen.

If this post was encouraging to you as you spent time with God, don’t just keep it to yourself- share it with a friend! Part of my desire with this series is to encourage you to sing God’s praise in the everyday moments of life, but to also come alongside someone else in doing this in their lives as well. So think: Who could you invite to join you in spending time pondering the Psalms this week? Someone you’re discipling? Your husband or children? A friend that you know needs encouragement? Bring someone alongside you and share with one another how God is drawing your heart to praise throughout your day. And please share with me below how you are praising God through the Psalms as well. Let’s praise his name together!

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6

  1. Thanks for the encouragement to praise God through psalms this week Kristin! It has been helpful to meditate on some psalms of praise during my early morning newborn feeds!

  2. Hi Rose! Thanks for asking! I didn’t have a plan to make more Psalms of Praise any time soon, but now that you’ve asked, I may just have to plan to do more soon! 🙂 Thanks for your encouragement!
