Psalms of Praise: Psalm 145

*This post is part of a series looking at the Psalms to encourage your heart towards singing God’s praise all throughout the day. For the rest of the series, go to: Psalms of Praise. Come along with me as we dive into the Psalms and praise God’s name together! *

Thank you for joining me for day one of the Psalms of Praise series! I am so excited to be diving into the Psalms this week with you. As I’ve spent time in the Psalms recently, I have been so encouraged to praise the Lord. His character covers this book of the Bible and gives a beautiful example of how to praise Him in any and every situation of our lives.

Each day of the series, I will post the Psalm accompanied by a song that puts the words of the Psalm to music. This practice has been a beautiful way for me to meditate on God’s Word all throughout the day as I sing His Word back to Him. I will also include questions to think on as you ponder the verses, as well as a prayer of praise to God. Let’s dive in!

Psalm 145: Great Is the Lord

A Song of Praise. Of David.

1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.

10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
    and tell of your power,
12 to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

[The Lord is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.]
14 The Lord upholds all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand;
you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he also hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord preserves all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

Questions to ponder as you meditate on this passage:

  • What do you learn about God’s character from this passage that you can praise Him for?
  • How can you give thanks to God in response to this?
  • Is God most satisfying to you above all else?
  • How do you see the mighty acts of the Lord both in scripture and in your own life? How can you make His greatness and mighty deeds known to others?

Spend time responding in prayer to our great God and praising his name.

Gracious Father,

Your character astounds me! Thank you for who you are, you are so worthy of glory and honor and praise! Every day I long to praise your name forever and ever- for you are great and greatly to be praised- your greatness is unsearchable! I praise you for your glorious splendor and your mighty acts that declare your greatness. Lord, you are abundantly good, gracious, and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Thank you that you are slow to anger with my heart that is so quick to turn away. You are so merciful and gracious to me everyday. May all the nations and works of your hands declare your greatness forevermore. May my heart be fully satisfied in you today and praise your holy name forever and ever. Amen!

If this post was encouraging to you as you spent time with God, don’t just keep it to yourself- share it with a friend! Part of my desire with this series is to encourage you to sing God’s praise in the everyday moments of life, but to also come alongside someone else in doing this in their lives as well. So think: Who could you invite to join you in spending time pondering the Psalms this week? Someone you’re discipling? Your husband or children? A friend that you know needs encouragement? Bring someone alongside you and share with one another how God is drawing your heart to praise throughout your day. And please share with me below how you are praising God through the Psalms as well. Let’s praise his name together!

“Oh give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” Psalm 118:1
