Why a plan for memorizing God’s Word with your kids?

For more on why you should memorize scripture see: Getting Started with Scripture Memory

One day I was looking for a discipleship tool to use with my kids during our long drive each morning to school. I had noticed some areas of character that I felt we all needed to grow in, so I was in search of a tool to use to discuss God’s character, spend time in his Word together, and memorize it so that it would impact our lives as we “walked by the way” of our everyday lives. I wanted something simple, practical, and applicable. It was important to me that it wasn’t just a character study to grow us to be morally good, but to be transformed by the gospel in us and overflowing through us. I also wanted what we discussed to become a part of our “family language” as we memorized God’s Word and talked about it as we went about our days.

After much research and not quite finding what I wanted, I spent time putting together this Bible study to do together in a little notebook that we put in the car for our drive each morning. It is simple, practical, applicable, and easy to do on the go “as you walk by the way” (Deut. 6:4- 9). It is now in a prettier form and I pray it will bless you as much as it has our family.

How does the plan work?

I have chosen 5 biblical character traits in this study. For each, I have used a phrase that we use in our family to be a quick reminder to one another in the moment:

  • Choose to Love
  • Be quick to listen
  • Choose thankfulness
  • Please use kind words
  • Speak truthfully

Each study has a key verse to be used as the memory verse for the week.

Memorizing the verse is a key part of this whole study.

As we work each day to memorize the verse, we also discuss it, study it, and meditate on what it’s saying. Through this, my prayer is that God would carry this verse on throughout our day as we hide it in our hearts, are careful to do what it says, and are asking God to make us more Christ-like in all we do (Psalm 119:11).

Throughout each week, you will not only study and discuss the memory verse, but you will also study stories and passages that relate to the topic of the memory verse. This will help to solidify the meaning of the verse and help you to discuss further how to apply it to your lives. There is also a simple coloring sheet for the last day of each week as you review and discuss together.

This study is a simple, practical, and highly applicable to everyday life as a family. It could be used as a great way to start your morning by discussing over breakfast or a way to use a few minutes intentionally as you drive along the way to activities throughout your week.

I pray that as you study, memorize, and meditate on God’s Word together as a family, you would delight in the law of the Lord, and meditate on it day and night. And that as you do, you would be like a tree planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in all you do (Psalm 1). I also pray that this would be a starting point for you in discipling your children, and that as you see the simplicity of this study, you would have confidence to move forward to continue this practice on your own as a family after you finish this study. May it be a blessing to you and your family!
