Easter Activities for Kids

With Easter right around the corner, I wanted to share some of our favorite activities that have encouraged our family toward Jesus during the Easter season. Easter is my absolute favorite holiday- it is low key compared to other holidays, it’s in Spring which is my favorite season, and it gives an extra reason to celebrate Christ together as a family! And in my opinion…it’s the one that should be celebrated the most and made the biggest deal of!

Easter can be a really special time as a family to create memories, remember what Christ has done, and celebrate together how great God is! Below are some of our favorite activities that we’ve used at different stages for our family. All of these are great resources for tiny ones and older ones alike! I am always amazed at how much little minds can take in and understand. It’s never too early to start instilling the Truths of scripture on our child’s minds and hearts. It is also helpful to get a variety of methods for learning, mixing a few different things together- some reading, some interactive, and some more concrete, visual ideas.

Resurrection Eggs– These are our favorite! Resurrection eggs are a great way of storytelling the Easter story. They are a set of 12 Easter eggs with a different item inside of each egg representing one part the Easter story. There is also a little booklet that comes with to read a Bible passage and description of each item hidden inside. We have used these in a few different ways. Some years we start 12 days before Easter and we open one each day leading up to Easter. Other years we hide them all at once, put them in order, and then read them all in one sitting. It’s fun either way! These are a fun, interactive, and visual way of talking about the events leading up to the death and resurrection of Christ. You can buy them on amazon, (here) which includes the 12 eggs in a plastic egg carton and the booklet. You can also save the money and make one from items around your house, which we have done in the past! Here’s a helpful post on making your own: (Homemade Resurrection Eggs). We started these when our kids were tiny, but they still enjoy them now in upper elementary years!

Resurrection Garden– We first created a resurrection garden last year and we had SO much fun with it! It is basically creating a scene that looks like calvary and/or the empty tomb. There are many ways to make one of these, but we opted for just exploring outside and using whatever natural materials we could find to make ours. They weren’t as pretty as the (tutorials) we found, but we had a lot of fun being creative with them!

The LambThis book was first introduced to us through our church’s 3-4 year old Sunday school class. They went through it as a class and then sent a book home to each family and it has been a wonderful resource to us since then. It does an incredible job breaking down why we deserve death for our sin, what the punishment for sin is, what the role of a lamb was in the Old Testament, and why we needed a Lamb (Jesus) to take away our sins. It also does a great job of looking from creation to the cross as it explains the significance of Christ being our Lamb. Check it out (here).

The Good Story of Easter– This year we are trying out a new study from my friend, Molly over at Mollyflinkman.com and we are so excited about it!! It is an eight-day devotional for families to do together that takes you from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Each day goes into detail about the events of Holy Week in the context of the whole story of the Bible. There are picture cards to represent each day for a visual to put up and discuss, discussion questions, and a prayer to help guide as you finish your time together. We can’t wait to use this devotional as a family this year as we reflect and rejoice in God’s goodness! You can sign up to receive the pdf for this study (here).

Read the Easter story over and over throughout the time surrounding Easter. Read it in different gospel accounts, read it in different translations, listen to it through an audio Bible, and discuss different details and aspects of the story, always remembering to end with the resurrection! The story doesn’t end with Jesus dying for our sins, but the story climaxes with His resurrection overcoming sin and death. We serve a LIVING Savior and have a LIVING hope in Christ!

Act the story out! Acting stories out is a way that makes the story more concrete in our minds. You could act it out together or use little figurines or dolls you already have around your house. Make it fun and silly!

Do crafts and activities that remind us of the cross and the resurrection. There are a million ideas out there on Pinterest, so I will let you go find those for yourself 🙂

No matter what you do, keep it simple. Choose what you are going to do and do it well. As we spend weeks or months building up to a celebration like Easter, we build anticipation in our families. Excitement grows and rejoicing bubbles over as we celebrate our great Savior, Jesus who not only has died for our sins, but overcame sin and death and is ALIVE! All praise to Jesus!

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3
