Bible Memory for Kids: 1 Year Plan

bible memory for kids

I am SO excited to share with you what I’ve been working on: a new Bible Memory for Kids 1 Year Plan!!! I can’t wait to tell you more about it and share it with you!

I’ve talked a lot around here about how important scripture memory is for us and as we disciple others, including our children. After spending all of last year with a family goal to memorize the New City Catechism, I saw how fruitful it was for us to have a goal we were all working towards together. It got the kids involved and eager to continue memorizing as the year went on. As I began planning for this year, I wondered if I could create a plan that would get them equally as excited.

The kids LOVE to memorize Bible verses to song, so I looked up some of our favorite Scripture songs for kids to begin making the plan, and then it dawned on me to use our good friend’s music for the whole plan. This plan will take you through 45 verse cards (some with a couple of verses on them), so it is a great length to use throughout the year with a few extra weeks built in for longer verses or crazy weeks!

But before we get into the details of the plan, let’s chat a little about the “why” behind bible memory for kids.

Why is Memorizing Scripture Important?

If you head over to my post “Getting Started with Scripture Memory,” I give a more in-depth look into why scripture memorization is important in the life of a believer.

For me, scripture memory is essential to draw me to the Lord throughout everyday moments of my day to day life. As I go about my day, the verses that I have committed to memory are the ones that come up in my thought life, as I talk with others, and as I pray. When I have memorized them, I tend to ruminate on them throughout the day, meditating on God’s Word as I go, and I see His Word in action through God’s work in me each day.

This is why I want to impart this love for memorizing scripture on to my kids. I want to give them a longing to know God, to grow in love for Him, and to be transformed into His likeness. One of those ways God works this out is by knowing Him deeper through His Word, and seeing how the Holy Spirit uses the Word to transform our thoughts, attitudes, and actions in our everyday lives. I desire to give my kids a firm foundation in God’s Word during the years I have them in my home, praying that when they leave home, the truths of scripture will have taken root and produce fruit for all the days of their lives like we see in Psalm 1:

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3

How Can I Help My Child Memorize Scripture?

There are so many ways to memorize Bible verses with your kids: saying them a little at a time, over and over, coloring sheets, writing them out, hand motions, and on and on we could go. But, the easiest way (hands down!) that I have found to help my children with Bible memory is through using bible verses to song. Let’s be honest, I learn so much easier this way too! Two other key things that I have found helpful are:

  1. Repetition, repetition, repetition!! Review everyday and keep reviewing.
  2. Discuss: Don’t just sing the song or memorize the verse, discuss what the verse means, praise God together for what you’ve learned, and discuss how to apply it to your life if applicable. This will be done at various levels depending on the ages of your kids, but it is important to help them to understand the truths you are memorizing and meditating on together. Allow them to ask questions and to learn from the surrounding part of the passage as well in order to know the context of the verse you are learning.

There are SO many incredible groups to listen to that make beautiful scripture songs for kids. For the purpose of this bible memory plan for kids (which I will get to shortly), I want to point you to the awesome work of my friend, Andy at Lantern Music!

Scripture Songs For Kids With Lantern Music:

Andy does an incredible job at putting Bible verses to song and making it fun for all, and enjoyable to listen to for the parents! You even get to hear from his wife and kids in some of the songs, which is so lovely. Go check out his music here.

The 1 Year Bible Memory Plan for Kids that I have put together uses songs from Lantern Music. Each of the 45 Bible memory verse cards has the verses he uses in the song so that you can follow along on the card or use the card to quiz one another after listening to the song together and singing along.
